Currently the commercial market in Canada is in the infant stages. We are beginning to experience significant growth in these areas, as consumers become increasingly aware of ostrich products.

Meat

At present it appears that there is potential for development of a healthy domestic and export market. Unlike European countries, Canadians are unaware of the meat and its qualities. We as an industry have the task of developing marketing and promotions aimed specifically at education and awareness of ostrich meat and its preparation. There is a definite interest from the Food and Beverage industry in Canada for ostrich meat as well as export markets for Canadian produced ostrich meat. There is some marketing of the meat being done currently, however, supply continues to be short of demand.

Leather

Presently there is one established commercial tannery for ostrich skins in Canada. There are a few small tanneries that have processed ostrich skins on a custom basis. Most skins up to this point have been used by the producers for their own uses, such as custom made boots, wallets, etc.

Skin Care Products

Many wonderful skin care products are made from Ostrich oil. The oil itself is rich, smooth and luxurious; and can also be used to make soaps, lotions and creams. Gift baskets containing these products make sought after presents.

Other Products

The feathers are used decoratively and make fantastic dusters. Since dust adheres to Ostrich feathers better than to other feathers, the ones made from ostriches don't just fling the dust around, they remove it!

Eggshell become the canvas for artwork, both painting and carving.
